Reaction roles & self-roles
Let members pick their own roles – via emoji reaction, select menu or button.
Quick look
This is how it looks in Discord – with sample data.
Roles people pick themselves.
A menu with roles for games, topics or notifications – members choose, yurna assigns instantly.

With reaction roles, members grab their own roles – for games, languages or notifications, for example. Your team no longer has to hand them out manually. yurna offers three selector modes:
- Reactions – members react with an emoji and get the matching roles. If they remove the reaction, the roles go away again.
- Dropdown – a Discord select menu below a message.
- Buttons – one button per option, each with its own style, emoji and label.
In the dashboard#
In the dashboard sidebar, open Welcome & members → Reaction roles (/dashboard/<server>/reaction-roles). Each configuration appears there as a card you can edit or delete.
- Click New reaction role.
- Optional: enter a Rule name so you can find the configuration quickly later.
- Choose the Channel.
- Choose the Selector mode: Reactions, Dropdown or Buttons.
- Choose the Message source:
- Existing message – yurna uses a message that's already in the channel. Enter its Message ID. This only works with reactions.
- Dashboard embed – yurna publishes a new embed message that you design right here. This is required for dropdowns and buttons.
- Under Options, define what members can pick. Each option needs an Emoji and at least one Role. Use Add option to add more.
- Click Save.
Within about a minute, yurna publishes the message or adds the reactions below the existing message.
Tip
To get a message ID in Discord, right-click the message → Copy Message ID. Developer mode must be enabled in your Discord settings for this.
Embed message#
For a dashboard embed you design the Embed title, Description, Footer, Thumbnail URL, Image URL and Embed color. The live preview shows you the result, including buttons or the select menu.
Options#
- Emoji – a Unicode emoji or one of your server's emojis. Each emoji can only be used once per configuration.
- Roles – one or more roles the option grants.
- Label and Description – optional, e.g. as button text or text in the select menu.
- Button style – buttons only: Blurple, Grey, Green or Red.
Dropdowns and buttons support at most 25 options – Discord doesn't allow more.
Multiple selection and behaviour#
- Allow multiple selection – members can hold several options at once. When it's off, a member only keeps the roles of the option they picked last.
- Mode (dropdown and buttons): Toggle (one click gives the role, another removes it), Add only or Remove only (e.g. to unsubscribe from notifications).
- Maximum at once – the most options a member may hold at the same time. Empty means unlimited. Only applies with multiple selection.
- Requirement – only members with this role can pick, for example after accepting the rules.
Deleting#
When deleting, you can choose Also remove user reactions. yurna then clears the existing reactions below the message as well. Roles that were already given stay with the members.

How many panels you can create depends on your plan: New Moon 10, Half Moon 30, Full Moon 100.
By command#
You can also set up self roles with /selfroles. A "panel" is one configuration, just like in the dashboard. You need "Manage Server". Options you leave out stay unchanged; - clears a text field.

Common questions#
Why aren't roles being assigned?#
yurna needs Manage Roles and must be above the roles it hands out. With buttons and select menus, yurna names any roles it isn't allowed to give directly in its reply.
What does "This message could not be found" mean?#
The channel and message ID don't match, or the message was deleted.
Why can't I create a new reaction role?#
yurna needs at least one text channel and one role (other than @everyone) that it can see. Also check whether you've reached your plan's panel limit.
Do roles stay when I delete a panel?#
Yes. Roles that were already given stay with the members.
