Honeypot: lure spam bots into a trap

A channel nobody should write in. Spam bots post into it blindly and get banned, kicked or timed out right away.

SetupDashboardModerationSecurity

The honeypot is a trap channel: it only holds a warning from yurna, nobody should write in it. Spam bots, however, post into every channel blindly – and get caught right away.

The honeypot is the shield's spam trap. You'll find it as its own entry under Dashboard → Honeypot (/dashboard/<server>/honeypot) and still in the shield. Both pages use the same settings. The honeypot has its own switch and works even when the shield is otherwise off.

In the dashboard#

  1. Under Set up channel choose Create new channel (yurna creates #spam-trap at the top) or Use existing channel (yurna empties it first).
  2. yurna posts the warning and pins it. The trap is armed.
  3. Choose the Punishment: Ban, Softban (ban and unban right away, just cleans up), Kick or Timeout with a Duration in minutes. On a ban, yurna can delete the messages of the last 0–7 days.
  4. Exempt bots: on = other bots may write there, off = bots are punished too (never yurna itself).
  5. More exceptions: roles that may write in the channel. Admins and your team (Manage Server / Manage Messages) are always exempt.
  6. Warning text: your own text for the warning. With {honeypot.count} the warning shows how many accounts the trap has caught – yurna updates the number on its own.
  7. Pin the warning: the warning stays at the top of the channel.
  8. Click Save.

At the top of the page you see how many accounts the trap caught in total and in the last 30 days. Every catch also shows up under Incidents in the shield and in the shield's log channel.

Note

yurna needs Manage Channels, Manage Messages and, depending on the punishment, Ban Members, Kick Members or Timeout Members.

Common questions#

Can a member get banned by accident?#

Yes, if they write in the channel – that's why there is a clear warning. After a ban the member gets a DM pointing to the ban appeal. You lift the ban with the button on the message in the log channel.

Do I need the shield for this?#

No. The honeypot has its own switch.

How often does yurna update the counter in the warning?#

After every catch, at most every 15 seconds.
